NAYO (Nancholi Youth Organization) works with the Nancholi community to enhance access to vital health services, address the challenges of HIV/AIDS, and educate youth on sexual health. Through focus groups, NAYO learned that young people in Nancholi were eager for greater gender equality and more supportive health services.
Project Overview
From 2016 to 2022, Minga partnered with the Nancholi community to enhance access to vital health services, address the challenges of HIV/AIDS, and educate youth on sexual health. Through focus groups, we learned that young people in Nancholi were eager for greater gender equality and more supportive health services.
In collaboration with NAYO, we trained youth leaders in sexual and reproductive health, increased access to condoms and other contraceptives, conducted leadership and life skills training for youth leaders, and expanded access to HIV testing and treatment and sexual education through community workshops, films, and youth discussion groups. We strengthened NAYO’s capacity through training in data management, proposal writing, and monitoring and evaluation, as well as institutional training on gender sensitivity for NAYO staff. In a second phase (2015-2019), NAYO established a youth radio program focused on health and gender equity.
The NAYO team launched the Youth Power Radio Program (YPRP) in Fall 2019, recruiting and training youth on radio presentation skills and developing content for topics that were emerging as key youth issues throughout the country. Despite challenges of the pandemic in 2020, the radio modality became an extremely powerful way to communicate with youth about topics ranging from gender-based violence to mental health to sexual and reproductive health. By the end of 2020, the CEO of Angaliba Radio station announced YPRP was rated by listeners as the “most exciting and informative program on tackling issues related to socioeconomic development for citizens.”
